The sword was held in high regard in ancient China. Sword wielding exercises were not only beautiful to watch, they were also practical in nature. The sword was used to fight, or to defend against attackers.
These days the sword holds a much more peaceful purpose. The Chinese perform sword wielding exercises to improve their health and to create a simultaneous state of calm and concentration. To be both alert and at peace, both energetic and relaxed: this seems impossible to most of us. Yet in the Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang, opposites do not exclude each-other: they complement each-other, keeping each other permanently in balance. It is on this philosophy that the sword wielding exercises are based.
During the exercises you relax your body and your mind becomes calm. By focusing on the tip of the sword, you develop your concentration. The precise movements improve your posture, you become more steadfast, stronger. You come to create a balance between relaxing and concentrating, between mind and body.
For those practicing Taijiquan, the Taiji sword wielding exercises are an extension of their knowledge. It can also be taught to those who are only beginners at Taiji. Even children will benefit from it, because it heightens their concentration.
